Some Daddies like to watch football, some Daddies like to watch basketball or baseball, some Daddies even like to go fishing. But this Daddy likes to dj! I know for sure that if Drew didn’t feel called by God to aide in giving God’s word to remote people groups who don’t yet have it in the language they grew up speaking, then he would be trying to make it as a DJ. LOL. So you can imagine that there are days when Drew will bust out his decks and turn our house into his very own club, minus the large amounts of drunk 20-somethings and disco lights. Yesterday was one of those days so I had to record the event. It was a tame party and I couldn’t get Poppy to come downstairs and dance like she normally does but the next post will explain why! Teehee. Here is DJ Daddy doing his thing with the bass pumping through to the neighbors who live behind.

Regrettably, last Sunday Emily had to work. Knowing that she likes to hear of Poppy and me doing things while she works (instead of just sitting at home)–seriously!–we ventured out to nearby Joyner Park where the wonderful Town of Wake Forest was offering one more in its series of summer Sunday concerts. This particular Sunday’s concert featured bluegrass group The Rye Mountain Boys. For most of the show Poppy sat in her new umbrella stroller. The concert started just before she woke up from her afternoon nap, so I packed up Poppy’s lunch and we set up camp on the grass to eat, sunbathe and take in the guitar and fiddle music. We had a great time and Poppy, as she often does, quickly made friends.

I think its fair to say that Poppy comes from a musical family even though its only her Granddad and Aunty Sally who currently pick up their instruments at least once a week. So we thought we’d introduce Poppy to her first musical instrument early. Let the records show that Poppy played her first note on the piano at almost 8 months old, haha! And she took to it so well that she was even singing along by the end of it. We’ll get her playing some Mozart soon just for her Grandad.

Emily’s been doing well at keeping the weight off. I was told the other evening that I haven’t gained any sympathy weight either. These are good signs. This is what we want to hear!

We’re both on our feet quite a lot: Emily at school and clinicals (running around the hospital) and me at work serving people tea. Also, now that it’s summer, Wake Forest has concerts in the park which is probably less than a mile from our apartment. We walked to the park last week to catch the local high school’s jazz band but we’re a little too late. They’d gone! This Sunday we left earlier and walked to the park in time this time to find a sign saying the concert had been moved for fear of rain. The concert, featuring a zydeco band, was now at a different park about another half mile from this one, further on away from our place. We made it in time and enjoyed a couple of songs and then headed back.

What I really wanted to tell you though was that today Emily’s been cleaning out the cupboards and by that I do mean cleaning them out by organizing and cleaning them out by eating. She was pretty tickled to find a chocolate bar (Hershey’s dark) hidden in the back of one of the cabinets. This was before the walk to the park(s). Who but a pregnant woman would take a chocolate bar with her on a walk, munching (and sharing a piece here and there) as we walk?!

Perhaps the best kept secret about the Mausts is the musical prowess of my late grandma Ella. She had the unique ability to hum and whistle at the same time. Yeh, you might think, “Well, I can do that, too,” but let me assure you that my grandma brought the heat long before Rahzel came on the scene impressing people with simultaneous singing and “mouth drumming.”

What contradistincts Ella Maust from the likes of latecomers like Rahzel was her ability to not only hum and whistle at the same time, but to do so while harmonizing with herself: whistle = melody, hum = harmony. What now. You’re probably saying, “I need to hear this action should I be convinced of this Maust’s musical mania.” And, to you, I say listen below. Recordings courtesy of my grandma’s brother, Martin. Date: November 1996.

Here’s a mix I cooked up for you of some popular tunes which I’ve been enjoying over the last couple of months. The mix progression centers on avoiding key clashes, a new skill I’m trying to pick up. So, those who are super sensitive to keys and key clashes, please, if you hear dodgey keys mixing together, let me know so I can improve. Slap this mix on your MP3 and go for a run, and most definitely if you really enjoy any one song, buy it to support the producer (e.g. Beatport.com). Enjoy!

We were fortunate enough to get tickets and find a decently priced hotel in downtown Charlotte (a three hour drive from Wake Forest). I’ve just added about 100 pictures from our time in Charlotte at the club (called The Forum), at our hotel (The Blake), and a funny little place we played around at on Friday the day after, before heading home, called Discovery Place (we saw the crazy Pompeii exhibit). There are cool pictures and funny pictures. The cool ones for us might be the funny ones for you. Oh well.

Below you’ll find three fresh videos, two from our time with Armin and one as me acting a weatherman at the Discovery Place. The thumbnail at the top left links to the club promotional poster for Armin.
