Kid in King Arthur’s Court

Remember this Disney film from 1995? If you know nothing else of the film, you might recall the premise of a teenage Californian baseball player falling into an abyss during an earthquake. The light at the end of the tunnel drops him on top of the Black Knight in the middle of a Middle-Aged field. Thwarting the Black Knight’s thievery brings Calvin Fuller of Reseda into favor with the King Arthur himself. What proceeds from here is a series of anachronisms between the 20th century lad and the 6th century denizens.

Calvin of Reseda is a walking anachronism.

  • He quips, “Cool!” upon meeting King Arthur
  • His baseball uniform becomes the stereotypical dress of Resedians
  • His portable CD player wows the court
  • His roller blades woo both the King’s daughter and the town smith
  • Mad Dog Bubble Gum delights the King

Apart from being an intriguing time-travel film (time-travel being one of my most wanted wishes), A Kid in King Arthur’s Court demonstrates how I sometimes imagine myself exploring the writings of St. Augustine and Martin Luther, or reading church history and hearing about Christians throughout the centuries. When I enter their writings, mental time-travel turns me into a walking (or reading) anachronism just like Calvin of Reseda.
