Original Post

My boy Timothy Lee is unstoppable. First, I posted my Kindle version of the SBLGNT. Then, Timothy Lee left a comment announcing his Kindle version which incorporated fast dictionary look up of passages. Now he’s updated his version to include the SBLGNT critical/textual apparatus and the front matter. This is the Kindle version I like most. Did I mention that Timothy is 16 years old?! What a brother!

Excellent! I was reading on my Kindle and thought, “Surely there has to be a GNT available…” and here it is. If you don’t mind, I will pass this page along.

Glad you found this, Dan. Blessings in your preparations to serve in Spain!

I appreciate it–the same to you in your preparations for Cameroon.

Great! I also work on Kindle Bible publications, although most of them are not free. For example, see The New Testament in the Original Greek, Byzantine Textform 2005.

I hope Timothy and you will not mind if I improve Timothy’s SBLGNT Kindle ebook to improve formatting, add a hyperlinked table of contents, Direct Verse Jump and other OSNOVA navigation aids for the Kindle. I’ll release it for free per SBLGNT license and post here and on my blog.

That’s probably a bit redundant, but sure why not given the license.

First of all OSNOVA thanks for informing me about your operation. It isn’t always easy to find good bible study resources for Kindle.

Second I think it would be wonderful if you are able to improve on it. Although I must admit, other than the standardization with your other resources, I really don’t know how it will be improved. I think that the dictionary look-up is probably as fast as it is going to get. But I think that it is wonderful that you are making it available to a wider audience. I really didn’t do that much to make it other than adding in the forward-matter and working out the find and replace macros to transform the text from the XML source.

Also if you want I can send you the HTML source file.

Timothy, you’ve done a great job.

I’ll only do small things (some formatting, 5-way controller navigation, TOC, the unsupported characters as images). I’ll post it today or tomorrow. Your html would have been helpful but I am almost done. I just used the SBL xml files.

Your dictionary lookup is almost the same as my DVJ-2 method. I like to leave the text search functionality though. I also include another DVJ method based on the search function. Both are described here: http://osnova.com/category/how-tos/

I’ll also do a version for Nook although the DVJ-2 will not work there.

OSNOVA Be sure to let us know when it is finished as I would be very interested to see it. Also, do you have any reccomended resources for learning about kindle book formatting as you seem to know quite a bit and I am always interested in learning more?

      1. OSNOVA Avatar

Sure. The best book on Kindle formatting/layout (although somewhat dated) is http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0024FAPF4/

Feel free to email me if you have any questions my (name at gmail.com)

I standardize on the OSNOVA features (DVJ, 5-way controller navigation, TOC) so all OSNOVA Bibles and Commentaries could work together. For example, you search for jn.3.16 and find the passage in all OSNOVA publications that are installed in the Kindle.

As promised, here is the free Kindle edition of SBLGNT from OSNOVA.

    Complete description is at http://osnova.com/2011/06/12/sblgnt/

You can download it for free from Google at http://goo.gl/5zs2u

OSNOVA’s Kindle edition of the SBL Greek New Testament provides an excellent formatting and navigation. The OSNOVA Kindle edition incorporates an active table of contents, a 5-way controller navigation between chapters and books, a cross-reference system between the Bible text and the apparatus, and the innovative navigation aid called Direct Verse Jump 2 (DVJ-2), which makes it easy to open any Bible verse in mere seconds. The complete instructions on how to use all navigation aids in this publication are found at the beginning of the book.

    Enjoy!
