July 4th!!

When Drew told me that it would be my turn to post on July 4th, I felt quite a bit of pressure.  Today was my second July 4th as an American citizen and I have to admit, I’m very proud of being an American.   Why? you ask.  Because it’s not easy becoming a citizen.  The title bears a lot of meaning for me as I remember the journey and the hard work (mainly on Drew’s part).

It starts to get interesting when you have two places to call home, two places to go ‘back’ to.  I love England with all my heart and I’m possibly more proud of being British.  But, oh wow, does America have a special place in my heart that England can never live up to.  It’s the place I found true love and it’s the place where my babies were born.

So, last night in bed I lay there thinking about today and suddenly decided I needed to do something special.  Not only because it was going to be Henry’s first, not only because it was going to be my second, not only because it was going to be Poppy’s third but because it is July 4th and we were going to be away from all things American.

What sums up 4th July???  FOOD.

This morning after Poppy went to daycare I got to work.  I quickly made some paper bunting and a sign.  Grabbed Poppy’s cowboy boots and found anything that looked American to use as a table decoration.  Then I went to the store with Henry and had three things on my list.  Hot Dogs.  Potato Salad.  Corn on the cob.  Well, you’ll be pleased to know I found two out of the three!  The French don’t know potato salad at all 🙁  And it looked like the (pre-packaged) corn had been sitting there for a couple of years 😉  There was one option for hot dog buns and they came in a pack of four.  It’s nice to know you can always buy Cocoa-Cola wherever you are 🙂

When I got home, I threw some potatoes in a pan and whipped up some really basic potato salad.  When Poppy came home from daycare I made her a grilled cheese, corn on the cob and she had some chips (crisps).  Henry ate a frankfurter sausage sliced up in small pieces and chowed down on a corn on the cob.  When Drew came in from school, he got a special grilled cheese (he likes honey in his) and a hotdog.

I found it really fun to prepare and although it wasn’t much it was our little way of celebrating far way from ‘home’.  Happy Fourth of July tout le monde!!!!

So sweet of you to put forth the extra effort to make an “ordinary” day in France extraordinary for the babies- it’s always hard but it’s always worth it!
